Pilsen – A University City
Based on the partnership agreement signed on December 17, 2013, between the University of West Bohemia (UWB) and the City of Pilsen, UWB receives an annual grant of approximately CZK 2 million. The aim of the partnership is to support and develop education and promote the image of a strong university city fostering research, innovation, and new technologies. The agreement defines several areas of cooperation: education and research, culture, sports, extracurricular activities, social projects, and mutual promotion. Each year, these areas are further specified by the City of Pilsen.
Once the topics for the upcoming year are announced (typically at the end of January), an internal call for project proposals is published (on the Project Centre website – Calls section). A working group composed of representatives from UWB selects projects that meet all criteria (around the end of February). These projects are then presented to both working groups for final selection (approximately April).
The minimum requested amount per project is set at CZK 90,000.
Approximate timeline:
- January: Call for internal competition
- February: Submission of applications
- March/April: Joint meetings of representatives
- May/June: Contract signing
- December/January (following year): Grant settlement
Call frequency: once a year
All communication with the grant provider, including questions regarding budget, spending, etc., must be conducted exclusively via the Project Centre administrator.
Pilsen Region
Based on the Regional Cooperation and Partnership Agreement signed on December 19, 2012, and the Memorandum of Cooperation dated November 24, 2017, the University of West Bohemia (UWB) receives an annual grant for recurring activities/projects. The amount of the grant is determined by the region and typically ranges between CZK 7–9 million.
The aim of this partnership is to:
- Support the promotion of technical education
- Encourage lifelong learning
- Provide methodological support for teachers at both secondary and elementary schools
- Support the increase of international academic and research staff to develop regional universities and research institutions
Around late September/early October, the region notifies UWB about the activities approved for funding along with the grant amount (the final amount may be adjusted based on the decision of the Regional Assembly). Afterwards, project leaders are invited to submit full applications. These applications are then sent to the region representatives by the end of October. The individual projects are approved in January or February, followed by the signing of a grant agreement.
Approximate timeline:
- October: preparation and submission of project applications
- January–February: project approval
- May: contract signing
- December/January (following year): financial settlement
